Time: 30 - 45 minutes.
Grade: 4 - 8
Curriculum Area: Social Studies, Language Arts
Materials: pencils, pens, paper.
Activity: Have half the
class imagine that they are working at Victoria Mission during the 1860s,
while the other half imagines that they are at Fort Victoria during the 1890s.
Ask the students in each group to write a letter home to friends or relatives
in Eastern Canada or the Red River Settlement. The letter should describe
their life, duties, hardships and activities. Afterwards compare the letters.
How had life changed during this period, and how was it different to work at
the Fort as compared to the Mission?
