Zofia Haraszkiewicz - 103 years

Zofia Haraszkiewicz's 103rd birthday was celebrated at the Smoky Lake Nursing Home, December 23. While Zofia's 100th birthday saw MLAs and family attend, and letters of congratulations and certificates from the premier, prime minister and governor general, Mrs. Haraszkiewicz's 103 birthday was a quiet affair with a cake and pictures taken with the Nursing Home staff.

Zofia came to Canada in 1930 from Poland with her two and a half year old son Henry. Her husband had come to Montreal two years earlier to find work. Later they moved to the Newbrook area and bought a homestead, two miles from Long Lake. Zofia lived in the shack by Newbrook until the log house on the farm could be finished. She mud plastered the walls, white washed the ceilings and scrubbed the wooden floors.

Her second son Casey was born in 1931.

Zofia's husband worked out at sawmills, while Zofia looked after the cows and chickens. The bread she baked was famous throughout the area. She loved to sew, quilt and embroider bedspreads. She had a spinning wheel and spun yarn in the evenings to make socks. She has led a quiet life, but a long one.

Zofia has two sons, one grandson, one great grandson and one great, great granddaughter.
