Harry Holowaychuk

Mr. Harry S. Holowaychuk died early Tuesday morning, Jan. 9, 1979. The 67 year old retired teacher and principal of H.A.Kostash School in Smoky Lake suffered a heart attack on Friday, Dec. 29, 1978.

Mr. Holowaychuk was in Edmonton Thursday, Dec. 28 picking up decorations for the New Years Frolic at the complex when the chest pains started. He has been in intensive care in the Royal Alexander Hospital.

Mr. Holowaychuk was Ag. Society secretary treasurer and as such was in charge of the gate at hockey games, supplies for the booth and organizing the Ag Society Bingo and countless other functions.

Mr. Holowaychuk was president of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church for a number of years, director of the Smoky Lake Processors, at one time a town councilor secretary treasurer of the Smoky Lake Curling Club for many years secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, Legion member and on the executive of the Legion Branch 227.

He came to Canada in 1922 and attended White Earth School and HAK before taking teachers training at Camrose. The second world war interrupted his teaching career. He served overseas with the RCAF. At wars end he earned a Bachelor of Education degree at U. of A.

He is survived by his wife Olga and 7 children; his father Sam, who is in the Smoky Lake Nursing Home, his sister Ann Makarenko and sister Sophie Reader of Vancouver.
