The Henderson Gazetteer and Directory gives the following description of Smoky Lake: 

A post office 10 miles north of the Saskatchewan River on Sec. 26, 59, Reg 17, west of the 4th Mer, in the electoral division of Victoria. Is 10 miles from Pakan, the nearest telegraph office, and 46 miles from Lamont, the nearest railway. Reached by regular stage and by livery. A farming community. Has a Greek church and mission school. Mails weekly.
