Golf in Smoky?

Picture 80 or 90 acres of open grassland studded with groves of poplar and spruce just 1/4 mile north of the Russo-Greek Orthodox Church in Smoky Lake - a great place for a gold course. Well that's what the men and women of Smoky Lake feel who are planning a meeting for Wednesday the 28th of June.

The land in question is already owned by the town and open for the development of a golf course. A 9 hole course could easily be accommodated on that amount of land. But many decisions have to be made. Will the course have grass or sand greens? Where will the fairways be put? Who will plow and seed them? Is volunteer labour available to build a club house?

A matching grant is available as part of the Recreational Master Plan, but how will the initial money be raised? All the volunteer man hours spent on clearing the land and building the club house can be applied as part of the local money raised. Will the Cross Country Ski Club and the Riding Club who will be able to use the buildings for their own activities help in its construction?

These and many other questions will be dealt with at the 8 o'clock meeting on June 29 at the Smoky Lake Town Hall. Anyone interested in joining the Town and County Golf Club please attend the meeting.
