Pine Ridge Opens

Pine Ridge is located on 275 ha of woodland 16 km east of Smoky Lake. And an additional 194 ha outside the fenced area are reserved for future expansion. Facilities include a seed extractor plant, cold storage facility for seed, assembly line seeding unit, 20 greenhouses, reservoir, laboratories and service shops.

Pine Ridge has 15 full-time employees, but during the busy season - from March through September - it employs about 100 persons, most of whom come from the surrounding area.

The annual operating budget totals more than $1 million. About three-quarters of this amount directly benefits the local community.

Construction of the nursery complex was supervised by Alberta Housing and Public Works. Initial survey work on the site began in the winter of 1975.

Spruce and pine cones are shipped to Pine Ridge by both the Alberta Forest Service and commercial timber companies.
